Higher AOV for orders placed post-6pm
If you look at your ecommerce traffic analytics, you will likely notice a significant spike in visits late in the evening. After-dinner shopping has quickly become one of the most active windows of. the day. Driven by a desire for immediate gratification, consumers shop late and expect their purchases to arrive the very next day.
However, for most ecommerce brands, the operation day ends long before 10pm. When a customer lands on a website at 10:15pm and sees a shipping notice warning that next-day delivery is no longer available, they often abandon their shopping baskets and look to competitors who can deliver faster.
THG Fulfil's 2025 data study, which analysed c.40 million customer records, demonstrates that extending next-day delivery cut-offs is a highly effective tool for driving new customer acquisition and increasing average order value (AOV).
The Rise of the Midnight Shopper
Consumer behaviour is shaped by instant access. Whether it's streaming content, same-dday grocery delivery, or next-day beauty drops, consumers expect near-instant delivery. In ecommerce, this translates to a growing demand for later order windows.
- 27% of next-day delivery orders placed on THG Fulfil's platform occur after 10pm.
- This late night order volume has grown by 7% compared to the previous year.
If your fulfilment partner cannot support the late-night dispatches, you are missing out on more than a quarter of your potential next-day delivery market.
Extending your shipping window does not just capture your existing demand, it actively attracts new customers. When competitors close their shipping windows before 10pm, high-intent shoppers look for alternative brands that can still delivery the next day. This creates a valuable opportunity for customer acquisition.
The data study tracked this trend across two key verticals between 10pm and 1am:
- Wellness & Nutrition: On average, 21% of wellness and nutrition orders placed in this window come from first-time customers. This percentage rises steadily as competitors' cut-off times pass. By the final hour, between midnight and 1am, new customers make up 23% of all orders.
- Beauty: For beauty consumers, where purchase urgency is traditionally lower, 8% of post-10pm orders come from new customers. Crucially, this acquisition rate rises each hour, mirroring the patterns seen in the wellness sector.
Late-Night Shoppers Are Higher-Value Buyers
Late-night shoppers don't just buy more frequently, they also tend to spend more. Consumers who shop late are often highly motivated to purchase and are willing to pay for premium, reliable delivery options.
For example, UK Beauty orders placed between 10pm and 1am have a 6% higher AOV compared to daytime purchases.
By extending your shopping cut-off times, you attract new customers and secure higher-value transactions that improve your overall margins.
1am Next-Day Delivery Cut-Off
Extending cut-off times to 1am is an operational challenge that legacy 3PLs cannot meet. It requires a fully integrated fulfilment operation where software and automation work together.
In August 2024, THG Fulfil extended its UK next-day delivery cut-off from 10pm to 1am. This allows THG Fulfil clients to be the only retailers open for next-day delivery orders after 10pm.
In ecommerce, the brands that offer the most convenient customer experience are the brands that win. Extending your next-day delivery cut-off to 1am allows you to capture high-intent shoppers, win customers from competitors, and increase avergae order value.
