Job Description: Gaffer
Location: Icon studios
Reports to: Head of Studio Operations
Overview
We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Gaffer. The role responsible for designing, executing, and managing the lighting and electrical requirements for all in-house productions. The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on experience in lighting for video, photography, and virtual production.
Key Responsibilities
Lighting Design & Execution
-
Collaborate with the Director of Photography/Video (DP) to understand the creative vision and develop a comprehensive lighting plan for each scene.

Select, plan, rig, and operate all lighting setups for video, photography, and hybrid shoots.

Manage power distribution, ensuring all lighting and electrical equipment is powered safely and efficiently, including the use of generators when necessary.

Lead pre-light days and oversee the safe and efficient de-rigging of all equipment after productions.

Make on-the-fly adjustments during shoots, responding quickly to the needs of the DP and director.
Rigging & Electrical Safety

Lead all lighting and rigging operations, ensuring strict compliance with LOLER regulations.

Oversee the safe use of all electrical equipment, calculating loads and managing distribution to prevent hazards.

Ensure all work is conducted in line with the Work at Height Regulations.

Use and manage electric hoists, truss, MEWPs, ladders, and complex rigging systems with a focus on safety and best practices.

Author, review, and ensure adherence to risk assessments (RAMS) for all lighting and electrical work.
Virtual Production (VP) & Studio Operations

Oversee the lighting aspects of setting up, calibrating, and operating virtual production LED screens.

Provide expert technical input on lighting during VP shoots.

Manage the lighting and electrical inventory, coordinating kit preparation, rentals, and returns.

Assist with general studio resets and ensure excellent housekeeping within the lighting and kit department.
Skills & Experience
-
Demonstrable experience as a Gaffer or Chief Lighting Technician in a professional studio or film production environment.

Fully qualified electrician with an in-depth understanding of power distribution, circuits, and electrical safety on set.

Expert knowledge of lighting design, equipment, and rigging systems, with a strong understanding of UK safety standards.

Experience working collaboratively with Directors of Photography to execute a specific visual style.

Familiarity with virtual production workflows; knowledge of Unreal Engine is advantageous.

Exceptional organisational skills for managing equipment, scheduling, and studio logistics.
Mandatory Training / Qualifications
-
Work at Height Awareness Training – advanced understanding of safe practice, risk assessment, and fall protection.
-
Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) Training – IPAF or equivalent accreditation. Can be provided.
-
Ladder Safety & Inspection Training – certified for correct use and inspection of ladders/steps.
-
Advanced Rigging Training – PLASA or NRC, or equivalent.
-
Thorough knowledge of Regulations and compliance for studio environments.
-
Certified in electric hoist operation.

Training can be provided.
