Assistant Management Accountant - THG Ingenuity
Role Summary:
A central accounting role responsible for cost control, financial analysis, and monthly management reporting. Working at the intersection of Finance, Procurement, and Technology, this role ensures tight financial controls across the business and delivers actionable performance insights directly to key financial stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Cost Control & Financial Analysis
- Own the monthly cost control cycle: tracking actuals against budget, identifying variances, and escalating risks to the FD and CPO in a timely manner.
- Conduct in-depth cost and expenditure analysis across business functions, with a particular focus on procurement spend and technology investment.
- Develop and maintain robust cost control frameworks to ensure all expenditure remains within approved budgets and aligns with business strategy.
- Evaluate the financial impact of procurement decisions and technology projects, providing clear recommendations before commitments are made.
- Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities in partnership with the Procurement and Technology teams, quantifying benefits and tracking delivery.
Monthly Reporting
- Prepare and present the monthly management accounts pack to the CFO and CPO, providing clear commentary on performance, cost trends, and material variances.
- Translate complex financial data into concise, executive-level narratives that drive informed decision-making at leadership level.
- Produce forward-looking analysis: including rolling forecasts, scenario modelling, and KPI dashboards - to support strategic planning discussions.
- Maintain the integrity and accuracy of all financial reports, ensuring they are delivered to agreed deadlines and meet the highest standards of quality
Procurement & Technology Partnership
- Act as the finance business partner to the Procurement and Technology teams — attending key meetings, reviewing purchase orders, and providing financial challenge and support.
- Work closely with Procurement to ensure supplier contracts, purchase commitments, and spend approvals are financially sound and properly controlled.
- Partner with Technology teams to track and control project spend, ensuring capital and operational expenditure is forecast accurately and governed effectively.
- Establish and enforce purchasing controls and approval workflows in collaboration with Procurement, reducing financial risk and improving compliance.
- Support the evaluation of technology investment cases, building business cases and post-investment reviews to assess return on spend.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process for cost centres across the business, coordinating inputs from Procurement, Technology, and other functional leads.
- Maintain rolling forecasts that reflect the latest business assumptions, ensuring the CFO and CPO always have an up-to-date financial picture.
- Challenge budget holders on spend plans and assumptions, ensuring forecasts are realistic, stretching, and consistent with strategic objectives.
- Monitor budget performance throughout the year, producing timely reforecast updates and flagging material changes as they arise.
Controls, Governance & Process Improvement
- Design and maintain strong internal controls across the procure-to-pay cycle and technology spend, ensuring compliance with company policy and external regulations.
- Proactively identify weaknesses in financial processes and lead improvements that reduce risk, increase efficiency, and strengthen the control environment.
- Ensure all financial activity is underpinned by appropriate governance structures, documented procedures, and clear audit trails.
- Support year-end audit processes by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting evidence related to cost and expenditure.
Key Requirements:
- Strong cost control and financial analysis skills
- Experience managing budgets, forecasting, and variance reporting
- Ability to identify financial risks and support profitability
- Knowledge of financial governance, controls, and compliance
- Confident using financial systems, reporting tools, and data analysis
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
- Able to partner with Procurement and Technology teams effectively
- Commercially minded with strong strategic thinking
- Accurate, organised, and detail-oriented approach
- Comfortable presenting financial insights to senior stakeholders and leadership teams
